Harmonia2In recent years, our cities and countryside are invaded by lady beetles presenting various colors. These Asian lady beetles are well adapted to our country since their introduction in the late 90s. Invited originally in Belgium to help our growers to control aphids, Harmonia axyridis is now attacking our native lady beetles and sometimes cause significant damage to fruit orchards. Numerous Belgians see their homes being invaded by numerous individuals. e.

Are you a victim of lady beetles invasions ?

Lady beetles have entered your house? They invade your windows, walls, furniture? They annoy you with their number or odors ?

Above all, avoid insecticides in your home, in order to preserve the health of its occupants. Of course the best way to avoid hosting lady beetles is to prevent them from entering, but we do not always have the means to replace the chassis. The ideal is to use a vacuum cleaner. Place a stocking inside the tube so as to collect them easily. Then put them in a freezer. Do not crush them, they leave on their support yellow spots that are difficult to clean.

Does the Asian lady beetles live in agricultural crops in Belgium ?

The Asian lady beetle preferentially lives in wooded areas. However this exotic and invasive species reproduce and feed into agricultural crops such as wheat, potatoes, corn and bean. More abundant in corn and bean, it has become in 10 years one of the five most abundant species that can be observed in agricultural habitats. Besides being invasive, this predator attacks the other consumers of aphids species. The assessment of its impact on the local insect fauna is currently underway.
