INNOVATION IN DISEASE CONTROL COMBINED WITH THE MANAGEMENT AND VALORISATION OF DRAGON FRUIT CULTURE WASTE

SUMMARY OF THE PROJECT
This project aims to offer collaboration between Walloon and Vietnamese structures within the framework of an integrated approach centred on the circular economy and the creation of a new value chain starting from dragon fruit crop residues combined with the systemic control of one (or more) pathogen(s) affecting this crop. The provinces of South Vietnam, and in particular the Vietnamese province of Binh Thuan, are world leaders in the production of this fruit, mainly for export. Even though flourishing, this crop is currently under attack by a “disease” initiated by one (or more) pathogenic agent(s) (fungal and/or bacterial, especially Xanthomonas type bacteria) whose mode of transmission is not known for this type of crop in Vietnam, and which is decimating the population of healthy trees but above all impacting the quality of the fruit destined mainly for export. The priority objective of this project is therefore to demonstrate the viability of creating a system to combat the spread of this disease through preventive actions, by promoting the collection and use of crop residues, which are probably one of the identified vectors of propagation. These valorisation options (biogas production on the one hand and bioplastics production on the other hand) are evaluated on the basis of their technical feasibility and highlighted with the local economic elements of the provinces of South Vietnam. A good understanding of the systemic control systems of the bacterium(s) or pathogenic agents responsible for the rot phenomena will also be proposed in order to limit the spread of this/these to other territories. This action will be carried out in synergy with southern operators by raising the awareness of actors in the field, such as local farmers and cooperative and public structures.
