DEXPLIMAR

Exploitation of lignin as a renewable source of materials and aromatic compounds

The DEXPLIMAR project was launched in 2012 (GreenWin project)

The DEXPLIMAR project aims at developing a global Walloon network for the collection, the extraction and the use of lignin, a promising plant component. In this project, Walloon farmers (via Wal-Agri) reap and provide different straws that are currently not valorized. These straws, considered as agricultural wastes, are available in sufficient amounts for the intended applications. Various eco-friendly methods will be developed at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech in order to extract lignin from the straws. New lignin-based polymers will be synthesized (by the project partner UCL) for applications as roofing membranes containing no bitumen nor petrochemical polymers (project partner: IMPERBEL). Unmodified lignin will also be tested as raw material for the manufacture of waterproof membranes.
